Poetry: Finding my voice

21151653 10213795555233219 607502135875882388 nWhen I was at school, Poetry was a pet hate that I took with me well into my adult years, but a few years ago, it gave me a eureka moment that effectively kick started my career as a writer.

Back in the day, the only verses I would tolerate would be the genius writings of my comic hero, Spike Milligan, for example:

There was a young man from Bombay
On a slow boat to China one day.
He was trapped in the Tiller,
    With a sex mad Gorrilla.
And China's a long long way!

As a fan of the Goons, I could not get enough of that stuff. But put me in front of writings about daffodils, fluffy clouds my first thought would immediately reach for the headache tablets. But when I had to study Creative Writing to pass my Degree , I thought that this would be me falling at the final hurdle.

It wasn't looking good when during the early stages of the module, I was asked to look at a picture and asked what thoughts went through my mind. My only thoughts was that the photographer needed to buy a different camera. My hatred of Poetry appeared to be as strong as ever. However I need to break down this barrier if I was to get my Degree. Thankfully I had a determined tutor.

Not only did I write a poem, I produced two. Not only were they deemed good enough to pass, but it got a positive reaction from fellow students and I was so chuffed with the comments from my tutor. A barrier was not only broken, but when I looked at my efforts, I experienced the joy of producing some creative writing that people liked. And there wasn't a fluffy crowd in sight.

It was the turning point for me as a writer. And I thought that with me now working on my third novel, this would be a good time to revisit those poems and tidy it up a bit. I might even do more in the future.

There is no denying the importance of imagery in poetry, but for me, it is more important to find your voice.

And thanks to my Tutor and the support of others, I have started to find mine.
