The Butlins Connection - The English Riviera Butlins Majestic 2019 Reunion

Looking through some of my old press releases, I came across a phrase that for me best describes the Butlins Holiday Camp Empire – “British Escapism at its best”, even though the concept was dreamt up by Canadian.

It was a magic land full of colour endless entertainment, fun and madcap tomfoolery, where for seven days, you simply forgot about the world outside. For any holidaymaker, young or old, it sowed the seeds of many fantastic memories and also special friendships.

It is fair to say that the Empire has evolved in recent years and not the size that it once was, but it still remains a national institution, still creating those special moments for holiday makers young and old that continue to pass through those gates. And we must not forget those who had the opportunity to work in the various departments, whether it was the various camps or hotels, who helped deliver that special magic that Butlins has been supplying for more than eight decades.

For those associated with the “old style” Butlins, there remains a special bond which connects people throughout the UK. A Butlins Connection. Whenever they get together, it is always something special Over the years, “Butlins Reunions” have been as big an event as going on holiday to Butlins itself, with devotees converging at venues around the country, not all of them with a direct link to Butlins of old.

In 2017, hundreds of former and holiday makers and staff travelled to Liverpool, the home of the legendary Merseybeat sound, for the Butlins International Reunion and Gala Dinner at the city’s Adelphi Hotel. During the three days that followed, guests got to relive those golden days during a weekend of fun and nostalgia, as well as experiencing Liverpool’s world-famous music and culture.

Butlins Internation Majestic Reunion 2019This year, the “Butlins Gathering” will head further south to the picturesque English Riviera, a place you would not normally associate with Butlins history, but on July 25th, for the next four days and three nights, Torquay’s top entertainment venue, the Majestic Templestowe Hotel is set for a “Hi-De Hi” makeover.

The event is set to be a sell out and organisers could not praise the management highly enough for the support they have received in making this year’s reunion possible. “The Hotel has given us carte blanche for the whole weekend,’ said Chief Redcoat, Tony Collier. “The owner of the Hotel “Mr Jimmy Wright, brother of Rick Wright, who once owned Cardiff City Football Club and bought Butlins Barry Island, at the dear old age of 80 plus years, is so excited about the event.” “He wanted to change the name of the hotel (just for the weekend) to Butlins. Subject to health, he will put in an attendance.”

Included in the packed weekend entertainment programme, which will include the performances from the hotel’s terrific resident entertainers, will be the return on the final night of one of the major highlights of the Liverpool Weekend, Motown Singing Sensations, “The Aim”. Tony added: “The support act will be our very own Stephanie “Stevie” Barker, who for the first time, amongst her Peers, friends and guests, is going to do 45 minutes. She is not getting paid for this as she has asked me to give her a chance to show everyone her act. How could I deny her request?”

“We are very lucky to have such a valuable Butlins family member amongst us.” As part of the planned entertainment, guests will have the chance to take in other numerous tourists’ attractions in the area as well as the popular open bus tours. And in true “Butlins Fashion”, the final evening will see a number of guests get into their traditional Red and White uniforms for a traditional “Redcoat Au Revoir.”

The 2019 Butlins and Majestic International Reunion, will once again be supporting their chosen charity, The Grand Order of Water Rats. Like previous Butlins Reunions, it is going to be a weekend to remember; we get to meet up with special friends as well as make new ones, who all have that special bond, that Butlins Connection.
